Hay River

We'll be in Hay River this evening and if everything goes as planned we'll be on the water tomorrow. It's only when you drive north that you really get a sense of the size of this country. We've been driving for two days and have another full day on the road just to get to the start of our journey in Hay River. From Hay River it's an another 1750 kilometers due north to the Arctic Ocean. This part we hope to paddle.

Looking at all the gear we have stuffed in our vans it's hard to imagine it all fitting in our kayaks but somehow it must. The bulk of our gear is food and this will shrink in size as we head north but at the start we'll be loaded to the gunnels like the barges that ply the river bringing goods to the communities. It's one of these barges that will take our vehicles north so they are waiting for us when we arrive in Inuvik.

We're excited and a little nervous. We're starting soon.
